Where it is practised in Tuscany
In Tuscany the geographies of historic embroidery are clear-cut. Pistoia has a tradition of religious embroidery tied to ecclesiastical patronage — vestments, stoles, chasubles, altar cloths — which from the Middle Ages onwards sustained specialist workshops in the area of the cathedral and the historic convents. Firenze has a tradition of high-end secular embroidery: trousseaux, household linen, luxury garments, work for the great fashion houses. The Lucca area has popular traditions of bandera (embroidery in stem and outline stitch on white linen) and of rete filet (embroidery on hand-knotted netting), cultivated in the women's craft schools. Pisa, Siena, Arezzo have schools of rural embroidery tied to wedding trousseaux, household linen and village traditions.
