Where
Where it is practised in Tuscany
In Tuscany these two specialisms have deep-rooted historical traditions. Firenze is the national centre of fine furniture restoration, with workshops in the Oltrarno that work for museums, high-end antique dealers, private collectors and church commissions. The presence of the Opificio delle Pietre Dure and of the various institutional restoration workshops has fed a private trade of the highest quality for centuries. Pistoia and Lucca have a tradition of sacred carving — church furniture, wooden statuary, liturgical fittings — tied to historic ecclesiastical patronage. The Arezzo area and the Val di Chiana have a production of carved furniture in the popular tradition and of restoration of rustic furniture. Specialist workshops also exist in Pisa (restoration of eighteenth-century and Empire furniture) and in Siena (Gothic and Renaissance carving).
