The water draws before the paper

The tray is the first sheet, and a sheet that keeps nothing. Every grain of dust, every residue of the previous print and every movement of the air can enter the image, because nothing protects the design: it rests on a liquid, held there by its surface tension. The marbler builds with care a surface that is meant to be wiped away before the next sheet.

A few minutes pass between the first drop and the moment the paper is laid down. In that interval the pattern can be opened, crossed, multiplied, ruined; it cannot be corrected. There is no eraser on a thickened bath, and every attempt to put something right produces a new design instead of bringing back the previous one.

Precision begins with building well something that will never reach the customer.

The tray holds a surface, not a background

The marbling bath looks almost still, held in a tray that is shallow and wide enough to take the sheet. Its job is not to colour by immersion, the way a liquid that soaks evenly into paper would: it has to offer a surface on which the colours stay separate long enough to be moved and transferred. This is why the water is thickened, with substances of plant origin or other preparations suited to the technique.

The viscosity slows the colour on its way down and makes every intervention legible. If the bath is too fluid, the drops scatter or sink; if it is too dense, they open with difficulty and the tools leave stiff responses. Temperature, resting time and cleanliness change how it behaves, and the right point is not a scientific measurement: it is a speed, the speed at which a trace closes again or a drop opens.

The colour, too, is prepared in relation to the bath. Pigments, binders and substances that alter surface tension have to find a balance: a mixture that sinks takes no part in the design, one that opens too far can leave a weak film, one that holds badly to the paper loses the image during rinsing. The recipe does not live outside its surroundings, because the water used, the humidity and the age of the preparations all change the response.

This is why a test almost always comes before the good sheet: one drop tells you whether the colour is willing to co-operate, and correcting means adding little, waiting and watching. Different pigments, besides, do not have the same weight or the same capacity to spread. Obtaining a coherent palette does not mean making every colour chemically alike: it means preparing them so that, while staying different, they can inhabit the same surface for as long as the work needs.

A drop takes the place of the one before

The colour is let fall on the surface. The drop opens into a disc and pushes whatever it finds around it; a second drop can enter the centre of the first, widen it outwards and create rings. The sequence stays visible, because the colour that arrives later does not necessarily cancel the one before it: it redistributes its space.

The size of the disc depends on the quantity deposited, on surface tension, on the composition of the colour and on the state of the bath. Two drops that look identical can open differently if one holds more surfactant or if the surface is already loaded. The gesture of the hand meets a chemistry that cannot be seen directly.

Building an even ground therefore calls for rhythm. The drops have to be distributed before the design starts to decay, spacing prevents accidental concentrations, the order of the tones decides which ones will stay dominant. The marbler does not paint a shape with a brush: he assigns space to successive pressures and watches how the bath translates them.

Before the tools go in, the tray can already be covered with circles, veins and fields of colour. The drops compress one another and generate edges that nobody has drawn as a line: the geometry comes out of the pressure between surfaces. Every addition reduces the free space and changes how the next ones respond, until adding no longer enriches anything and only makes the design confused.

This first composition matters even when it is going to be crossed many times over. The comb reorganises what is already there, it does not invent a distribution that was never prepared, and an ordered pattern can only come from a ground able to carry it. The water draws before the paper does and, in a sense, before the comb does.

The point does not draw: it drags

When a stylus crosses the bath it deposits no colour: it carries a thin portion of the surface with it and moves the fields of colour along its own path. A line pulled in one direction stretches the discs, a pass in the opposite direction creates undulations, a curved movement builds vortices. The mark is the deformation of something that was already there.

Depth has to be controlled, because the tool works on the surface and must not stir the bath underneath. Speed affects continuity: a pause piles up colour, a hesitation stays built into the pattern. The body has to hold the gesture across the whole width of the tray, with a wide movement that starts at the shoulder; the margin is delicate, and the tool has to enter and leave without creating build-ups.

The most fluid line comes from a hand that knows where it will end before it begins.

A comb carries many parallel points: crossing the surface, it repeats the same displacement at regular intervals and turns the ground into a sequence. The distance between the teeth, their fineness and the direction of the pass decide the rhythm, and a second comb can reorganise the first pattern into closer structures. The regularity of the tool does not guarantee a uniform result, though: where the ground has different densities the points meet different quantities of colour, if the comb tilts the apparent spacing changes, if the speed varies the waves tighten or widen.

The simplest machine amplifies the quality of the preparation and of the gesture. Tools can be built for one workshop and become part of its vocabulary: a particular spacing between the teeth produces a recognisable scale, a habitual sequence of passes builds a pattern. But the vocabulary is not a cage, because changing direction or breaking off the movement generates variations, and the tradition of decorated paper lives in this combination of rule and immediate response.

Every pattern holds the order of the gestures

On the dry sheet the design looks simultaneous: all the colours and all the lines are present at the same moment. On the tray, instead, they arrived one after another — first the ground, then the passes; first one direction, then the one that crossed it. The pattern holds a span of time that the paper flattens.

Anyone who knows the technique can read part of that sequence. The curves show which movement deformed the one before it, the regular repetitions reveal a comb, the rings tell the order of the drops. Not every detail can be reconstructed, because the surface reacts with variations of its own; even so, the sheet is not an arbitrary image. It is the record of a process.

That reading is what separates marbling from its printed imitation. A reproduction can copy the look of one specific sheet with great fidelity, but it does not contain the physical sequence that produced it. The difference is not always needed in use: it becomes important when the object declares a technique and value is attributed to the gesture that produced each copy.

Decorated paper entered the image of Firenze through binderies, stationers and objects made for travellers. Albums, boxes, notebooks and frames turned historic patterns into recognisable goods, and that spread supported the workshops but also encouraged imitations and production in which the reference to the city counts for more than the process. There is no deception when a printed paper is presented for what it is, and reproduction offers repeatability and availability: the problem arises when print uses the language of handwork to receive a value that does not match the work actually done.

The sheet receives only once

Not every paper takes colour in the same way. Fibre composition, sizing, absorbency, pH, weight and surface finish all affect the transfer: a sheet that is too absorbent can take the colour unevenly or distort, a surface with little receptivity can let it slide off during rinsing.

In many traditional practices the paper is therefore treated with a mordant, often alum-based, which helps the colour hold. The preparation has to be spread with care and left to dry, and the treated side has to be identified too: laying down the wrong one means discovering the mistake only after sacrificing the design built on the tray.

The choice of sheet then depends on where it will end up. An endpaper has to fold and work with the volume, a covered case asks for resistance to gluing and handling, a paper meant for framing can favour other qualities. The craft prepares the sheet for the image and prepares the image for the life the sheet will have to lead.

At the moment of transfer the paper is held along two sides, or guided by some arrangement that lets it meet the surface gradually. One point touches first, then the contact advances. Trapped air produces white areas or distortions, a sheet that slides drags the design, a sheet that drops abruptly pushes the bath and moves the colours.

The moment lasts a few seconds and closes all the work done on the tray. Once the paper has taken hold the pattern has been lifted off, and raising it again does not give back the earlier surface: the marbler has to decide when the design is ready and then give up any further change. Confidence in the gesture does not come from absolute certainty about the result, but from the experience accumulated in accepting a margin that no amount of testing can remove.

The sheet carries off only the skin of the tray

When the paper is lifted, the transferred colour shows the pattern at a different intensity from the one seen on the bath. Water runs off, the support curves, the fields of colour settle: what looked luminous can turn deeper or more opaque, and the final result will only appear after rinsing and drying.

The tray keeps residues that have to be removed before the next sheet, and a strip of paper or a tool cleans the surface; leaving traces introduces unplanned colours into the following print. Production in series therefore alternates building and cleaning: the creative gesture takes up only part of the time, the rest is what makes repeating it possible. The customer sees a rich surface, not the minutes in which the tray was brought back to a neutral condition.

Rinsing removes the residues of the bath and the colour that has not taken hold, but the water has to run without attacking the sheet: a direct jet or impatient handling can shift the pigments, create runs or mark a paper that is still fragile. If the pattern weakens too much the problem does not necessarily start there — it can be held in the recipe, in the mordant or in the contact time. The final stage reveals decisions taken at the beginning.

The wet paper, meanwhile, expands, because the fibres absorb water and the sheet temporarily loses its flatness. During drying it shrinks back, but not always evenly: edge and centre can move at different speeds, an area carrying more moisture can create undulations. The hanging system has to let air circulate without leaving marks, and sheets cannot be stacked while the colour is vulnerable: drying space becomes part of productive capacity, because a fast tray is no use if there is nowhere for each print to stabilise.

Once dry the sheet can be flattened, provided the pressure neither transfers colour nor unintentionally polishes the surface. The aim is not to erase every sign of the passage through water: it is to make the paper stable enough to be cut, folded and glued. Flatness is a function, not an abstract idea of perfection.

Two consecutive sheets are not twins

Repeating the colours, the tools and the sequence gives a very coherent family; it does not give the same design. The exact position of the drops, how far they open and the movement of the surface all change, and the cleaning between one sheet and the next and the gradual ageing of the bath introduce differences of their own.

That variability does not prevent design work. The workshop works on scales — palette, density, direction, size of the pattern — and can produce sheets close enough to cover a series of volumes or make up a set. The resemblance lies in the rules, not in a pixel-by-pixel overlay.

For the client it matters to understand which kind of repeatability is being bought. A handmade order can respect tone and character without duplicating the sample: demanding absolute identity would mean asking the technique to deny its own cause, accepting any variation at all would mean giving up the criterion. Serious work lives between those two extremes.

Names, too, only help up to a point. Peacock, combed, stone, snail and other terms let you recognise families of design, but they change between languages, workshops and periods: the same term can indicate different variations, similar patterns can be given different names. To reproduce an effect the name has to come with a sample and a sequence — how many colours, in what order, which comb, at what spacing and in which direction — because the finished image does not reveal every parameter.

The workshop sample book, in its turn, shows the outcome and keeps quiet about many of the causes. A collection of papers lets you compare palettes, scales and patterns and can guide an order, but the sheet does not keep the humidity of the day, the age of the bath, the dilution of the colours or the pressure of the hand. A code on the back, a recipe or the date reduce the uncertainty; even so, the new bath will have to be tested. The sample is a promise of direction, not a guarantee of identity.

This is why a workshop today can set scales, thermometers and written records alongside what the eye picks up: a number makes a condition communicable, the eye recognises when an unrecorded variable is changing the result. Useful comparisons are small and deliberate, because changing many things at once makes it impossible to know which one produced the improvement.

The cut chooses one part of the image

A marbled sheet is larger than the surface it will often cover. When it is cut for a cover, a slipcase or an endpaper, part of the pattern stays outside and the cut becomes a framing: it can centre on a calm area, bring out a diagonal movement or avoid a point that is too dense.

If two boards have to speak to each other, the craftsman decides whether to take them from adjoining or complementary areas; in a book, the front and back endpapers can come from the same sheet and keep a relation between them. The complete image is not necessarily the finished work: it is a reserve of possibilities that the binder reads in order to choose which part will accompany the object. Cutting well means recognising that every centimetre has a different rhythm.

As an endpaper, the paper then joins the block of pages to the case, visually and materially. It folds along the hinge, follows the opening and takes repeated stress: the pattern meets a structural function, and a paper that is too stiff, too fragile or badly glued can break exactly where the book is used.

Grain direction matters as well. Folding against the grain increases resistance and can produce cracks or undulations, so the binder has to orient the material in relation to the spine, while the moisture in the adhesive changes the dimensions for a while and can pull the case during drying. In a book the decorated surface enters a system of papers, boards, cloth, leather, thread and glue, and every element reacts to its surroundings in its own way.

Old does not mean born in Firenze

Giulio Giannini e Figlio was founded in Firenze in 1856 as a bookbinding workshop. Continuity within the family and the work on decorated papers turned a body of knowledge in the service of the book into a recognisable signature, but the value does not lie only in the age of the date: it lies in the relation kept between surface and construction. Knowing binding makes it possible to anticipate cuts, folds, adhesives and wear, and the pattern is born next to the benches on which it will be applied.

The family name offers a human anchor, but it must not turn the workshop into a scene outside time. Its survival depends on being able to serve contemporary uses, take on commissions, explain the technique and keep premises and preparations economically sustainable. Tradition is a continuity of work, not a room that has stayed identical since 1856.

Marbling, besides, has a history that crosses different territories and traditions. Techniques for decorating paper with floating colours are documented in Asia and in the Islamic world before they spread to Europe; in Europe the practice was circulating at least from the sixteenth century and found wide use in bookbinding.

The workshop in Firenze has no need to claim a local invention in order to own an authentic history. The value lies in the way a travelled technique was learnt, adapted and kept inside a culture of the book, and many crafts are made of knowledge that changes language and tools along the road. Recognising this wider geography protects the account from legend: Firenze becomes an important node, not the imaginary centre from which every gesture is supposed to have set out.

A mistake occupies the whole sheet

A drop that falls in the wrong place, a tilted comb or a bubble of air during transfer do not always stay small. The pattern is a continuous system and a mistake can alter its rhythm: a hesitant line crosses the whole tray, an unprinted area interrupts the surface.

The sheet can still find another use. A successful part can be cut out for smaller objects, an outcome outside the sample range can become a one-off piece, a trial can be kept as a reference. Salvaging does not mean declaring perfect something that is not: it means reading which functions are still possible. There is a point, though, at which the material has to be discarded, because using every sheet at any cost passes the defect on to the product and consumes further work.

Handmade paper is not valuable because every attempt succeeds. It is valuable because someone can tell an attempt from a result.

Cleanliness protects the unforeseen

Marbling takes variation in its stride, but it does not live with every kind of contamination. Dust, hairs, residues of dry colour and traces of detergent change the surface tension or stay printed in, and trays, combs, droppers and work surfaces have to be cleaned by methods that do not introduce new problem substances. The order of the space matters too: prepared sheets must not get mixed up with untreated ones, wet papers need clear routes, and a knock during transfer can ruin a tray built over many minutes.

Discipline is not there to eliminate the unforeseen that makes every sheet alive: it is there to define where it comes from. If the variation arises from the dynamics of the colours it belongs to the technique, if it arises from dirt or disorder it can be avoided. The freedom of the pattern depends on surroundings far less accidental than the surface suggests.

Hands leave something behind as well. Fingers guide the sheet, clean a margin, hold a tool, but they carry grease, moisture and pressure: on dry paper a fingerprint may appear only against the light, on a prepared sheet it can change how the colour takes. Gloves and intermediate tools can be necessary at some stages and do not automatically solve handling, because a dirty glove transfers residues, tongs can mark the edge, a grip that is too weak lets the sheet slip onto the tray.

Marbled paper is celebrated as visible proof of the hand, and it succeeds precisely because the hand agrees not to appear in the form of fingerprints, creases or hesitations. The gesture stays in the design and disappears from the physical surface. The presence of the craftsman does not coincide with every mark left behind: it coincides with the marks he knew how to choose.

The file shows a design, the sheet has to fold

A photograph records the image and makes it possible to archive it, communicate it or print it, but it does not keep the thickness, absorbency, flexibility and relation to light of the original paper. It does not always show the grain direction, the response to a fold or the quantity of colour deposited. It is an important document and a partial one.

Digitisation can widen access to sample books, protect fragile sheets from excessive handling and become a design tool: enlarging a detail, comparing palettes, simulating an application. The risk arises when the surrogate replaces the material in the very decisions that depend on its physical qualities. The question is not defending paper against the digital, it is knowing which information each medium carries.

The sheet, meanwhile, ages. Acidic papers, strong light, high humidity and unstable adhesives accelerate yellowing, brittleness and the alteration of colours, and a well-executed pattern is not immune to the chemistry of its support. In a book the endpaper also reacts to the materials next to it, because board, leather, glues and the papers of the block can exchange moisture or products of decay. Conservation means keeping stable environmental conditions, limiting light and handling without forcing the hinges.

Age in itself is no guarantee: some old papers survive well because they were made with stable fibres and processes, while many industrial papers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries suffer from acidity and brittleness. Time changes the reference as well, because pigments can shift and light can fade some tones, and repeating the colour perceived today could mean moving away from the original one. The conservator, the binder and the client have to decide which past they intend to follow.

Teaching the gesture takes a real tray

The sequence can be explained in words and video: prepare the bath, lay down the colours, move them, place the paper. Competence, though, is born when the student sees a drop open too far, feels the sheet bend and learns to clean the surface. The tray returns the effects of every choice immediately.

The teacher does not pass on a recipe alone: he shows how to diagnose. He asks the student to watch the edge of the drop, the speed of expansion, the response of the comb; he corrects the position of the body and the way the paper is held. A short course can produce a good sheet, but mastery calls for many surfaces built and wiped away, and above all for days on which the same recipe responds differently.

Knowledge forms in the distance between “I know which steps to carry out” and “I can work out why they are not working today”.

A decorated object, on the other hand, can be bought in a few minutes. Behind it lie the preparation of the bath, the treatment of the sheets, the mixing of the colours, printing, drying, flattening, cutting, gluing and finishing, and behind it lie trials that never became product. The price has to carry all that distributed time.

The pressure of the tourist market favours objects that are immediately recognisable and available in quantity, and a workshop can answer that by organising series and formats without giving up the technique. But if the price being asked cancels the invisible work, the only solution left is to turn the pattern into print or move production elsewhere. Survival does not depend on asking the customer for an act of charity towards tradition: it depends on making the difference understandable and producing objects that justify it in use. A cover has to open well, a notebook has to hold up, the paper has to go on giving pleasure after the journey is over.

The water is wiped away, the gesture stays

In the end the bath is cleaned or replaced. The colour that was not collected disappears and the surface goes back to holding no image. The dry sheet keeps only one contact: it does not show the weight of the paper in the fingers, the moment the comb reached the edge or the decision not to add one last drop.

And yet the gesture stays legible. It stays in the direction of the veins, in the rhythm of the repetitions, in the points where one field of colour opened further than the others. The paper is not a photograph of the water: it is a new surface, born from the meeting between a moving image and a support able to hold it.

In the Giannini workshop this surface enters the life of objects and goes on moving with them. It folds as a book opens, turns around a box, receives the light of a room.

The design was free for a few seconds. The paper gave it a limit, and that limit is exactly what allowed it to last.
