The back tells you how it was made

The cloth is not an empty surface. Warp and weft build a grid with a density, a regularity and a direction, and every technique leans on it differently: some follow the counted threads, some ask for a design laid over the top, others withdraw part of the grid and rebuild it as openwork. The choice of embroidery begins long before the needle, in the qualities of the ground fabric.

An even linen allows counting and holds the proportions. A cloth that is too open may not support raised work; one that is too close makes it hard to pass through the same point more than once. Washing and shrinkage have to be considered beforehand, above all if the piece is going into household use.

Even the direction counts. The selvedges show the orientation, and the front and the back of the ground can resemble each other without being identical; cutting without a margin, or turning a piece round during assembly, produces differences that embroidery does not correct. Before the first stitch the embroiderer decides which structure will take thousands of perforations without losing stability.

The back is not the wrong side. It is the side that explains.

The design has to become a route

A motif drawn on paper shows outlines and proportions. To embroider it you have to translate it into stitches, directions and a sequence: a continuous line may need breaks, a filled area may be built in layers, a raised element needs a foundation the drawing does not show.

The route takes the back into account. Planning does not remove the adjustments — the response of thread and cloth may suggest a different density — but the improvisation happens inside a map. Without a route the front can still look right while the back accumulates knots, thicknesses and tensions that will reappear with washing or with use.

The design reaches the cloth through a tracing, a spolvero (pouncing: powder pushed through a pricked drawing), a suitable paper or light marks. The line has to stay visible long enough to guide the hand, then disappear or be covered without leaving a halo: a mark that is too strong emerges beside the thread, an unstable one fades before the end. Some marking materials react to water or to heat and have to be tested on a sample, because the promise of an erasable line is no substitute for checking it on the real ground fabric.

The transfer can also distort the design if the cloth moves: pinning it down and checking the reference points and the symmetries stops the mistake from being found many hours later. The preparatory line is meant to disappear, but its precision stays inside the figure: the embroidery keeps a trace of what can no longer be seen.

The frame does not do the embroidery

Stretching the cloth on a frame or in a hoop is a way of working on a stable surface. The tension has to be enough to prevent folds without distorting warp and weft: if the ground is pulled beyond its natural condition, the embroidery puckers when it is released. A small hoop moves along the motif, a large frame holds a wider portion still, and in both cases the edge has to be fixed without leaving permanent marks.

Over the hours the tension drops, and the hand does not only check the stitch: it checks the sound and the response of the cloth. The frame does not do the embroidery; it creates the conditions in which the hand does not have to keep correcting the movement of the ground.

The needle is a measure too. Point, eye and thickness have to be in proportion: a needle that is too large widens the holes and separates the fibres, one that is too small makes the pass hard work, frays the thread and increases the tension required. The point can be sharp, to go through the structure, or rounded, to slide between the threads without splitting them, and in counted thread techniques that difference protects the regularity of the grid. A needle wears, oxidises and bends: going on using it because it has been in the box for years is not loyalty to the craft, it is introducing friction and risk.

The gugliata (the single cut length of thread) also has a finite length. Cutting a very long thread looks like a way of reducing the number of fastenings-off, but at every pass the part not yet used crosses the cloth, twists, loses its lustre and can knot; a shorter gugliata forces more restarts and in exchange preserves the thread and keeps the tension controllable. Silk, cotton, wool and metal threads behave differently. The embroiderer measures the distance a thread can travel before it loses its character.

The back is built together with the front

A knot is quick, but it creates thickness, presses against the ground and can show through on the front. Many kinds of work prefer to secure the end under the stitches that follow, with small anchoring stitches or with other systems consistent with the technique: the beginning becomes part of the construction instead of a hidden obstacle. An embroidery that is mounted and never touched will tolerate solutions a washed and ironed tablecloth will not; a metal thread needs fastenings-off that do not break it.

A clean back does not come from the absence of thread ends, it comes from ends that are distributed and protected. The embroiderer decides where a thread can begin without interfering with the motif and where it can end without working loose. These are decisions the front does not show, and that durability reveals.

Then there are the jumps. When the thread travels from one area to another without building stitches in between it leaves a float on the back: a short one can be functional, a long one risks catching, showing through a pale cloth or altering the tension. Sometimes it is better to follow a less obvious route on the front in order to keep continuity behind, and sometimes it is cleaner to fasten off and start again.

Turning the frame over often makes it possible to check what the hand might ignore. The back is not left to the end as a surprise: it is built together with the front. It is this habit that turns cleanliness into method, and stops a hidden knot from growing through dozens of stitches before it is found.

Tension builds the relief and can distort the ground

Every stitch has to sit on the surface without pulling more than it needs to. If the thread pulls, warp and weft converge and the cloth puckers; if it stays too loose, the stitch lifts, catches and loses definition. In dense areas many stitches accumulate forces, and even a moderate tension distorts the outline when it is repeated hundreds of times: the order of work and the alternation of directions help to distribute them, but the frame does not neutralise every imbalance.

The relief that is wanted sometimes calls for padding and for layers, and it has to be built by adding material, not by tightening the ground until something rises out of it. The distinction separates volume from distortion: the first belongs to the design, the second reveals a force that found no space.

The hand repeats a measurement, but each time it meets a different position in the cloth. Curves, corners and changes of density ask for adjustments, and stitches that are mathematically identical along a curve would produce different visual intervals on the inside and the outside: the regularity we perceive comes from controlled variation. Counting threads offers a structure, not an automatic decision, and the embroiderer compensates near an edge to keep the rhythm.

This is why two faithful executions of the same design do not coincide, and can both be right. Handmade work is not defined through error: it is defined through a regularity reached by repeated decisions, not imposed by a single mechanism.

When the decision was wrong, though, adding is not enough: you have to go back, lift the thread without damaging the cloth and rebuild. Unpicking asks for more slowness than stitching, because the fibres have already been pierced and they hold the thread. A small variation is absorbed by the motif; a mistake in the count multiplies and displaces the whole section that follows. The thread that is removed cannot always be reused, because friction has marked it and its twist has changed. Embroidery teaches a severe measure of value: some hours have to be lost in order to protect all the others.

Drawn thread work removes structure to build a new one

In drawn thread work part of the warp or of the weft is removed according to a design, and the threads that remain are gathered, wrapped or linked. The void is produced with precision; it is not a casual absence. The count has to be right before you pull: a thread withdrawn beyond the limit crosses an area that should have stayed solid, and it cannot be put back as if nothing had happened. The edges of the drawn thread area are secured so that the opening does not travel with use.

The technique makes the relation between decoration and structure obvious. The needle does not only apply a mark on top of the cloth: it reorganises the way the cloth holds. Light passes through and becomes part of the motif, and the two sides move closer together, because the construction is visible from both.

Punto antico, often associated with the Tuscan tradition, combines geometric motifs, drawn areas and counted stitches on linen, and its precision comes from its relation to the weave: squares, diamonds, stars and borders follow modules that have to meet at the corners without losing the count. White on white moves the attention from colour contrast to relief and to light, and the difference between solid and void appears when the cloth moves or is looked at from the side.

The apparent plainness contains a great deal of work. To build an even border on four sides you have to work out the ratio before you reach the last corner: the measurements of the object and those of the design have to be reconciled at the start.

Punto Casalguidi lifts the thread off the plane

The embroidery tied to Casalguidi is known for its use of linen, for counted thread grounds and for raised elements that can evoke plant and animal motifs and forms from the local culture. The surface gains thickness through padding and through stitches that build a body on top of the cloth, and that body has to be stable: an uneven foundation produces a broken volume, a covering thread pulled too tight lets the hollows show, and passes and fastenings-off accumulate behind.

Visit Pistoia records the vitality of punto di Casale and the work of the Club del Ricamo di Casale. The tie to the territory does not depend on a single unchanging motif: it lives in practice, in the ability to recognise the stitches and in the adaptation to contemporary objects. The name stays credible as long as it goes on pointing to a body of knowledge, and not only to a raised effect.

The Museo del Ricamo (the embroidery museum of Pistoia), on the other hand, records that punto Pistoia was devised within MOICA, the Movimento Italiano Casalinghe (the Italian housewives’ movement). Its presence beside far older techniques shows that a tradition can be consciously built, documented and passed on without pretending to a remote origin, while many accounts of craft assign centuries to every motif in order to raise its prestige.

A territorial identity can therefore be born from a modern initiative too, when it finds a community of practice and a recognisable language. Innovation does not necessarily break continuity: it uses inherited materials, gestures and contexts to build a new form. The question is not how old a technique is, but how accurately it is taught and how honestly it is told.

White does not make the work simple

In whitework thread and cloth are close in tone, and this reduces the colour contrast and amplifies every difference of lustre, twist and thickness. A frayed gugliata looks dull, an irregular tension changes the relief, a mark left on the ground is not covered by strong colours. The cleanliness of the hands and of the room then becomes a technical condition: the work can last weeks or months, and dust, hand cream and repeated contact alter the white unevenly. Washing at the end does not remove every contamination.

The light you work by is part of the method too. A raking source makes the stitches visible; a light that is too warm alters the perception of tone. White is not the absence of colour: it is a surface on which every condition of the work becomes colour.

Metal thread imposes the opposite constraints. In vestments and in precious embroideries the gold and silver threads can be made of flat strips or of metal wound round a core: they are expensive, stiff and sensitive to abrasion, and they are often laid on the surface and held down with small couching stitches instead of passing through the cloth again and again. Folds that are too tight break or open the winding, the pressure of the fingers dulls them, and damp encourages alteration.

Here too the back keeps the stitches that hold the metal and distribute its tension. An embroidery that shines on the front depends on a discreet net behind. The value of the material raises the responsibility of the gesture, but it does not change the principle: every visible effect needs a structure that must not compete with it.

Vestments called for a collective workshop

Large altar frontals, chasubles, processional banners and liturgical furnishings bring together surfaces, techniques and materials that take many hours. The Museo del Ricamo di Pistoia holds pieces from the seventeenth century to the twentieth, among them works with coloured silks and metal threads, and the scale of these objects makes the story of a single isolated hand unlikely. The work could be divided by skill and by part — design, preparation, ground embroidery, raised work, making up — and holding it consistent required patterns and supervision. The workshop and the convent were systems of production as well as places of devotion.

Liturgical use added a time dimension: the objects were worn, folded, displayed, repaired and adapted. The embroidery was not made for the display case, and conservation today meets marks of function that are not necessarily defects to be removed.

Convents and monasteries kept and developed skills in sewing and embroidery. The work went with community life, produced furnishings for the church and could support the institutions financially. Telling those hands only as devout patience reduces their professionalism: the technical complexity of the pieces shows design, knowledge of materials and organisation. The individual signature may be missing; the authorship of the work is not.

The silence of the documents is part of the history. Many women produced prestigious objects without their names entering the inventories with the same force as those of the patrons. A museum can make that asymmetry visible by looking at techniques, times and contexts, without inventing biographies we do not have.

The workshop-schools turned skill into income

Between the 1920s and the 1930s, workshop-schools were founded in the territory around Pistoia, supported in part by noblewomen, and the Museo del Ricamo connects that season to the spread of whitework and to the possibility, for many women, of contributing to the family budget. The home became a place of production. This gave access to income and at the same time held the work inside domestic spaces and hours that were hard to measure: payment by the piece could make preparation, the care of the tools and the remaking invisible.

Quality was checked through samples and deliveries, designs and threads circulated, and the finished piece went back into the commercial network. Domestic craft was not a spontaneous activity outside the market: it was a distributed form of organisation, held up by women’s skills and by relations of power that deserve to be told alongside the beauty.

In the trousseau those same hours took another form. Sheets, towels, shirts, tablecloths and other pieces were prepared over time, often in relation to marriage and to the role a woman was expected to fill, and the embroidery showed skill, care and family standing. The trousseau should not be read only as a patrimony of affection: it contained social expectations and work that was not always freely chosen. For some women the skill became economic autonomy; for others it was a duty inside a path already laid out.

Today many trousseaux stay shut away because they are fragile, the wrong size or too precious for daily use, and to reuse, adapt or conserve them is to decide whether the object should go on with its function or become a document. The value is not contained only in the number of stitches, but in the relations those hours built and sometimes imposed.

The sampler taught without explaining everything

Samplers and pattern books gather stitches, alphabets, borders and trials. They let you look at proportions and sequences, but they do not record the tension of the hand, the order of work or the mistakes that were corrected: they are material manuals that need a competent reader. A young embroiderer could copy a motif by counting the cloth and comparing the back.

Albums, magazines and specialist publications then spread motifs and instructions, connecting embroiderers to wider fashions: a design could travel far faster than a teacher and be adapted to local cloths and local objects. The instructions did not guarantee the same result, though, because they assumed basic knowledge, shortened steps and showed only the front. A motif could arrive from far away and take on a Pistoia character through the material, the combination and the community that used it: identity does not require isolation, it requires a recognisable way of transforming what circulates.

In the museum the sampler becomes a historical source, because it reveals the techniques that were taught, the materials that were available and the patterns that circulated. If it is shown only for its grace it loses its original function: it was a training tool and a professional statement used to get work, not a miniature picture. The Museo del Ricamo does not in fact display textiles alone, and thimbles, scissors, needles and pattern books give back the real scale of the work: a worn thimble shows the point of pressure, tiny scissors reveal the need to cut close without wounding the cloth. Tools are extensions of the body and they record habits, and keeping them helps to reconstruct postures the finished embroidery does not show.

Absence is eloquent too. Many ordinary objects were used until they broke and were not thought worth keeping: the collections represent what survived, not everything that existed. Like the back of a cloth, a museum has to show its own limits in order to tell the story precisely.

The rest of the knowledge passes through the hand of whoever teaches. The pupil tends to look at the front, because that is where the motif appears; the teacher asks her to turn it over, to check, to loosen a knot before the following passes pull it tight, and teaches her to feel when the thread has caught behind without needing to see it. The exercises separate the difficulties: first regularity, then corners, changes of thread, drawn areas, raised work. In embroidery groups and clubs the transmission is conversation as well, and the community keeps a knowledge that no manual contains in full: every correction on the back is also a handing on between generations.

Washing can move what the needle settled

Water, detergent, temperature and movement act on fibres, colours and tensions. A new embroidery can shrink differently from its ground; a coloured thread can release dye; a metal thread can alter; an old soiling can be bound up with degradation that simple immersion makes worse. For objects in contemporary use the care instructions have to be tested; for historical pieces washing should not be improvised, because it calls for conservation assessment and trials. Water does not automatically distinguish a deposit from the original material.

Drying counts as much as washing. Supporting the weight, keeping the shape and limiting the folds stops the cloth from distorting while it is at its most vulnerable. Ironing on the front flattens the relief; pressing from the back, on a suitable pad, protects the volume. Care continues the logic with which the stitch was built.

When the damage has already happened, a broken thread, a torn cloth and a worn edge pose different problems. Securing the ends stops the damage from going further, a backing can distribute the tensions, an integration that is visible but discreet can give continuity back; embroidering over the top without a diagnosis risks pulling material that is already weakened. In objects that are mounted or lined the back is not always reachable, and taking them apart can cause losses: the most complete repair is not always the most prudent. Remaking the missing motif can make sense for an object that stays in use, provided it is declared; in a museum context it would confuse original and addition.

Once it is mounted, sewn or framed, the back may no longer be reachable: before it is closed it is worth documenting it and checking threads, knots, residues and tensions. The mounting system has to leave the material room, because permanent adhesives and acidic backings compromise conservation, a seam that is too tight distorts the cloth, and glass in contact flattens the raised work and holds damp. The finished object goes on being a textile even when it is treated as an image, and whoever keeps it inherits an invisible structure: always folding at the same point, or hanging it without support, stresses the back before the front shows the damage.

Time has to enter the price

Machine embroidery produces complex, even and durable designs in far less time, and digital files govern density, sequence and colours. It is a technique with skills of its own, from digitising to the setting of the ground, and it should not be described as an imitation without work in it. The difference from hand embroidery lies in the way the decision is distributed: in the machine many choices are taken in advance in the program and then repeated, while in the hand tension and position are corrected at every stitch. An industrial run and a hand-worked piece answer different uses and different costs.

The problem starts when the process is concealed. A machine product sold as hand embroidered appropriates a value that is not its own; hand work that despises every technology ignores useful tools for design and for communication. Transparency makes it possible to value both without confusing them.

In commercial photographs embroidery is shown from the front and well lit, and the back rarely appears because it holds fastenings-off and passes. Yet showing part of it explains quality, density and cleanliness better than many words. Transparency does not require the back to resemble the front, because some techniques produce structures that are inevitably different: it requires that what happens behind is consistent with the function, with protected threads, stable tension and no harmful build-up.

Showing the process gives the time back as well. Counting the materials alone makes embroidery almost free: a piece of linen, a few threads, a needle. The real cost is the skilled time of preparation, execution, checking, finishing and management, and a complex piece can take hundreds of hours, with no way of competing on price with a machine reproduction. Difficulty is not measured by density alone: a small curve can consume more attention than a large filled area.

Underpaying because the work happens at home repeats a long invisibility. The history of Pistoia shows how much embroidery contributed to family budgets, and recognising that today means treating it as a productive skill, not as a pastime that becomes merchandise only at the moment of sale.

Turning the cloth over changes the story

Many historical embroideries do not carry the name of whoever worked them. When it exists, an initial can be found in a margin, in the lining or in the documents: the side that was not shown protected identities the official front of the object did not consider necessary. Signing today can be a choice of recognition, but it has to enter the construction without competing with the motif, and a card with materials and hours accompanies the object more effectively than a visible monogram. Authorship in embroidery can also be collective: giving names does not mean forcing a single author, it means rebuilding the network the product tended to hide.

On the front we see the result that patrons, families, churches and the market chose to display. On the back we meet the route, the corrections and the time. Together the two sides also tell a history of women’s work in Pistoia: practised in institutions and in houses, turned into income, passed on more often than not without a signature. The Museo del Ricamo, the heritage of Casalguidi and the communities that go on embroidering keep pieces and tools, but above all they make it possible to name techniques and contexts. The stitch does not float free of the life that produced it.

Turning the cloth over is not a way of exposing an imperfection. It is a way of recognising that the beauty on the front is held up by decisions taken behind it. A successful back does not have to be spectacular: it has to show that no thread was left without a reason and that every reason helped the image to last.

This reading also changes the way we buy and the way we look after things. It asks who did the work, which ground fabric was chosen, how the ends were secured, what care the object can bear. These are very concrete questions, and they give dignity back to a body of knowledge that was long praised in the abstract and poorly paid in practice.

The back offers no automatic signature, but it makes it impossible to believe that the embroidery appeared on its own. It still shows the presence of a person even when their name has not reached us.
